Tasting Notes

“A captivating blend of autumnal spice, dried cherries, balsam herbs and ashen stone smolders up from the 2019 Etna Rosso Barbagalli. It’s silky and enveloping yet cool-toned, with shades of lavender and sage that give way to mineral-inflected red and black fruits. Brisk acidity maintains balance as grippy tannins settle in and a tart blackberry saturation lingers on.”
Eric Guido, Vinous

“Ashy, sulfurous tonality of fruit with engaging earthy, savory berries, dried blood orange, dried meat, nori, white pepper and tar. Really intense, ripe and concentrated in flavor with a broad, full body. Paradoxically, there is very little heft. The tannins are abundant, fibrous and mealy. A great deal of depth and complexity here, too. Better in two to three years.”
Zekun Shuai, James Suckling

ProducerPietradolce

One of the rising stars in our portfolio, since its founding in 2005 Pietradolce has come to own one of the largest collections of pre-phylloxera vines on the active volcano Mt Etna – which are up to 120 years old. This ancient mountain commands the winery’s devotion and respect, the energy and nuance of the volcanic soils producing truly phenomenal wines. Owner Michele Faro and winemaker Giuseppe Parlavecchio focus exclusively on local varieties Nerello Mascalese and Carricante, producing a range of pure, terroir-driven wines roughly structured as Village, Premier Cru, and Grand Cru. While the do offer an elegance and depth reminiscent of great Burgundy, they offer incredible value compared to the Cote d’Or.
