Scores

Perhaps that explains the elegant, but rich style of the 2008 Calon Segur, which is dominated more than usual by Cabernet Sauvignon. Cropped at 40 hectoliters per hectare, it is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. Its sweet perfume of black currants, tobacco leaf, and licorice is followed by a wine with superb purity, good freshness, and a full-bodied style with ripe tannin as well as a long finish. Somewhat reminiscent of the 1996, although this vintage carries a much higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2008 should be relatively approachable given the sweetness of the tannins, and will evolve for 20-25 years. - 90-93 points Robert Parker

Tasting Notes

Raspberry coulis, red berries and a lick of cream, this is fresh, crunchy and vibrant and with plenty of character. Spice and minerality assert on the mid palate but the tannins are very supple and yet there is still a firmness to the structure. This is a classic in the making. Drink 2018-2030+

ProducerChâteau Calon Segur

Château Calon Segur from the Saint-Estèphe appellation in Bordeaux is one of the fourteen classified third growths in the famous Bordeaux classification of 1855. It is one of the original three vineyards in Saint-Estèphe and is a historic estate once housing the famous Château Montrose in 1825. It is also the northernmost classified growth in the Médoc. The estate has been owned by the Capbern Gasqueton family since 1894. The wines of Château Calon Segur have been cited of falling between Cos d’Estournel and Montrose in style, being long-lived without aggression. See More
