"TOP 10 EXCITING CALIFORNIAN CHARDONNAYS
Little has changed at Napa Valley’s Stony Hill Vineyard in the 63 years it has produced wine...While many California Chardonnays have become trimmer, Stony Hill’s has been there all along."
Decanter.com
Stony Hill is one of the oldest wineries in the Napa Valley, not far from Diamond Creek at the northern most part of Spring Mountain. Little has changed here in the sixty three years since the McCrea family bought this rugged former goat farm on the steep mountain overlooking Mount Helena: same family ownership; same winemaker for forty two years; no fancy tasting room; no new oak; and no malolactic fermentation. They make tiny volumes of mostly Chardonnay in a very traditional style. The wines are delicate and tightly wound, Chablis-like when young but with age, they blossom; the 2009 is just beginning to reveal itself.
