Château Coutet is a superb Barsac wine sold at reasonable prices. This is a refined, elegant wine...
Neal Martin
Château Coutet is an estate which possesses pedigree, excellent vineyard holdings and is producing its best ever wines today; yet its price remains below some of its more famed neighbours. Part of the illustrious group classed as first-growth in 1855, as part of the sweet wine contingent of this classification, Chateau Coutet was owned by the Lur-Saluces family who are famed for their centuries long stewardship of Chateau d’Yquem.
‘Coutet’ derives from the Gascon word ‘couteau’ meaning knife, alluding to the wine’s thrillingly fresh seam of bursting acidity which is deftly balanced by that creamy Barsac quality typified by butterscotch and vanilla cream. With the largest vineyard in Barsac they have an enviable selection of vines to choose from and only the finest berries make it into the winery. This blends the best of traditional artisanal methods – vertical basket presses and rigorous hand selection – allied to a modernised cellar and new owners who have pursued a regime of excellence since taking over the estate in 1977. Since the late 1980s quality has been on an upward trajectory culminating in the mesmerising effort offered in this vintage.

Having tasted the wine when we visited Bordeaux earlier this month we found it to be a very elegant and complex wine with an enveloping bouquet of attractive citrus and apricot fruits with subtle notes of white flower blossom. On the palate, the delicate white peach and stone fruit flavours combine with a note of acacia honey and a hint of spice on the finish. Unctuous and refreshing, this was one of the best Sauternes from this vintage we tasted. Drink 2020 - 2030. 18/20 points, Armit Wines
The wine is ripe yet stylish and pure. It has a great balance between bright acidity and rich fruitness. It is a very fine wine with great aging potential, as it hints at the more opulent future to come. 96/100 Points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast
A Coutet with great depth and fruit. So much dried tropical fruit character, bright acidity and fruit sweetness. Vivid and clean.94-95/100 Points, James Suckling
