“2013 Barolo has turned out to be a classic in the making” Walter Speller

The village of Barolo itself lies right in the heart of the hills that intersect the Barolo zone. It is tucked into a neat amphitheatre of vineyards that contain some of the region’s top crus.
Compared to the cool, snow-fresh wines of Novello and Verduno on the edges of the Barolo map, the wines from this central spot are noticeable for their appealing and juicy nature.
Its naturally warm location and sandy-silty soils lend a generous, primary fruit to the wines. And despite the generally cool features of the 2013 vintage, Barolo appears to have reached a good level of sweet maturity here, revealing supple red cherry wines layered with mandarin peel, currant and marzipan.
An abundance of crus stake a claim for ‘best’ vineyard, including Cannubi, Sarmassa and Brunate (which straddles both the villages of Barolo and La Morra).
Brezza and Luigi Einaudi are two historic estates whose elegant wines have a global following. We are delighted to include them as part of our special 2013 Barolo offer.

“Brezza remains one of Barolo's under the radar growers given the quality of wines that emerge from this cellar in the center of town” Antonio Galloni
|

Brezza’s wines embody traditional winemaking from the heart of Barolo. Their transparent style allows their impressive crus to shine, with no new oak aromas or rusticity to mask their personality. Brezza have considerable holdings in Cannubi as well as Sarmassa. This cru sits on the opposite side of the main Barolo ridge from Cannubi. The wines from here are more structured than those from Cannubi, displaying a confident, violet-freshness. While the vineyard may not be as well-known as Cannubi, insiders are well aware of its quality, and Brezza’s Sarmassa is outstanding.

“A house style that prizes elegance and tradition” Monica Larner The Wine Advocate

This important Barolo property was founded by Italy’s first elected President in 1897. His descendants have since acquired prestigious sites in the commune of Barolo including Terlo and Cannubi. Terlo is very close to the village of Barolo and runs south from the Cannubi ridge. Costa Grimaldi is a unique parcel within Terlo which turns southward on this rippling hillside. Einaudi’s Cannubi has a breadth and presence that signals its Grand Cru status. These are extraordinarily precise Barolos that have genuine soul and typicity.
