Elisabeta Geppetti and her daughter Clara Gentile treated us to a wonderful introduction to their small, but very highly rated property near Pereta and tasting of the supremely polished and truly delicious 2015 Saffredi. I absolutely love the redcurrant character of this wine.
We watched a film shot by Elisabetta’s daughter Ginevra, which offers an alluring insight and sense of place. What a beautiful part of Italy these wines hail from.
Following the tasting of the 2015, we enjoyed a remarkable lunch and vertical tasting of Saffredi at L’anima restaurant in London.
1992, 1998, 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2013 all showed tremendously well. The 1992 was magnificent alongside the Ossobuco Ravioli with Gremolata and Bitter Chocolate. What a real treat it was to taste one of the very few remaining bottles from the estate.
There was a lots of praise for the extremely drinkable 2007 around the table, but the savoury, almost balsamic notes of the 2004 were a real delight for me. What a tasty match for the Beef Fillet Tagliata, Bone Marrow, Blue Cheese and Salsa Verde.
2010 and 2013 Saffredi then matched up superbly with the Pecorino cheese to round things off. Both of these wines show the poise, tannin and fruit profile to suggest that they will be as enjoyable as the 2004 in ten years time.
Here’s to celebrating the 2016 next year...
